The Shelby County Board of Education governs the business operations of Shelby County Schools and is comprised of nine (9) elected Board members representing all districts in Shelby County. The clerk shall be responsible for an accurate journal of the minutes and all Board proceedings, although the Board may appoint this duty to a designee. The Board will develop rules for practitioner licensure that maintain high standards, are research based, and provide flexibility in attainment in all credential types, especially in shortage areas.
The Board members at the first Board meeting following the fourth Monday in April, once the newly elected Board members take office, shall elect officers. An African-American member of the Richmond School Board would be redistricted into oblivion as part of an effort to preserve the black voting strength in a neighboring ward. I have several stories about Scott Fisher and they will come out since he is tied to choosing a new school board member. Richmond’s newly elected School Board should have a gentler introduction to Mayor Dwight C. Jones’ school-reform style than the current board, but it shouldn’t expect the pleasantries to lead to a windfall of cash.
